CYBIS EQUINES

Boleslaw Cybis was a porcelain sculptor/artist who emigrated from Poland in the 1940's. He settled in the Trenton, New Jersey, area (the clay in that region is especially good for art porcelain, and you will see that other porcelain studios, such as Boehm, are in the NJ area as well, for the same reason) and opened a small workshop and studio. His work became very sought-after by collectors and, over time, his small studio attracted many talented young people who continued the tradition of his high quality work. In fact, the Cybis Studio is the oldest existing American art porcelain firm, and many of their pieces have been presented as Gifts of State over the years. During the 1960's, different "lines" or "collections" of subjects began to be introduced such as "Portraits," "Children," "Flowers," "Birds and Animals," "American Indians" and religious themes. This was the same time that the horse sculptures began to appear. Horse figurines have been produced starting in 1961 and are still being produced today, though most of the dozens of pieces have long since been discontinued. Currently there are about a dozen horses that are available, either in limited editions or open runs. This write-up was generously contributed by Elaine Cantwell. A great many thanks for all of the following scans sent to me by her as well! (except Mindy's foal shown above)
